The Media Center
The main purpose of the library is to provide the users with what they want or need for educational and leisure reading. The role of the school library is to provide a space both physical and virtual where learning can happen, where information can be transformed into knowledge and understanding, where students and staff feel secure and safe and thus able to focus on the activity they have chosen to perform or do in the library. We also need to have a library where every students are able to express themselves and learn by themselves for self exploration, knowledge and understanding and a place where students thoughts, opinions and values are cultivated and accepted. Libraries should provide people answer to their questions so that they are able to be in charge of their learning and more than that of their lives.
The purpose of a school library is to provide a wide range of books and multimedia resources to support teaching and learning throughout the key stages, and foster a reading and information culture that promotes independent motivated readers and learners for life. It will be appropriately staffed and funded and accessible to the whole school community during and outside the school day.

*Checking in and checking out books using Destiny Library System *Managing AR and star reading using Renaissance Learning Real Time Program *Conducting lessons through reading aloud, storytelling, guided reading, and other informational skills activities using informational texts and thinking map skills *Providing Audio-visual services such as film-showing, LCD projection and Power point presentation *Photocopying Machine Provision *Laminating Machine Provision *Letter Cutting Tool Provision Other ServicesResearch and Instructional Services offers personal assistance and instruction in the use of library resources to students and all members of the school community.
Effective library programs provide inviting spaces, up-to-date resources, and opportunities for powerful learning experiences so that students and teachers can gather ideas, exchange points of view, and learn together. At all grade levels, librarians help students grow as individuals by fostering a love of reading and learning; teaching students the critical thinking, technology, and literacy skills to ask good questions and investigate the answers; offering equitable access to resources and technology; and helping students make sense of the information they find to develop new understandings. Libraries help students develop information skills so that after graduation they can enter the workforce or go to college armed with the skills of learning and inquiry that they will need to be successful. These skills are built continuously from kindergarten to 12th grade through library instruction, and are aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards. |
Revised Circulation ProcedureHow to Check In and Check Out a Book Using Destiny
1. Go to Pittman School Home Page 2. Click Media Center at the top 3. Click on Library Catalog 4. Then click the words click here under Follett Destiny 5. Click login at the top right then type user name and then password. 6. Click on Circulation 7. Then click Check in button at the left corner if you want to check in or return a book or books then scan the books or write the material number (if you have the wrong barcode number, an error message will appear so you need to find the correct number inside the book at the back cover next to the last page of the book then type the number of the book then click go or enter.) 8. Then click reset button for every student to finish checking in books. 9. Then click check out button at the left corner if you want to check out or borrow a book then write your last name then click go or enter and then find and click on your name or scan the student I.D. card. 10. Make sure you have your name up or on the screen before you scan the books you are going to borrow or check out. 11. Click reset whenever you or student is finished checking out books. 12. Check the title of the book under check out or items out if you have the correct title of the books in your records. (Note: if the barcode is not scanning right, you have to find the material number inside the back cover next to the last page and type it in then click enter. Please call for assistance of the librarian if you did not get it right). 13. In order to save time, students should hold on to their old books to return, while they pick their new books up from the shelves so that when they are ready with their old and new books on hand, they can check in their old books first: click check in, scan all old books to return then click check out then check if your name is up, then scan all your new books to check out or borrow then click reset. |
